New bus shelters coming

Hits: 2

The City Council unanimously chose the color green over blue for the eight bus shelters, which will replace current shelters, some of which are structurally deficient and others damaged.

The city is also going to add two more shelters at two of the city’s 52 bus stops that a ridership report from MTS showed would warrant adding covers.

The cost to the city for the 10 new bus shelters is just over $106,000.

With a low dome, perforated metal walls, solar lighting and a seat, the shelters are similar in style to those used in El Cajon, San Diego, unincorporated parts of the county and in several North County cities.

Seven of the shelters that will replace the older ones are along Broadway between Lemon Grove Avenue and Federal Boulevard. The eighth is on College Avenue. The two new ones will be at Cardiff Street and Carlisle Drive and at Broadway and Grove Street.

“The bus shelters definitely needed replacement,” said City Councilwoman Racquel Vasquez. “They’ll provide protection from the sun and inclement weather, enhance comfort and convenience for people, and ultimately will help people find their way along our transit system. Anything we can do to spruce up our city is welcome. This will help our city look better.”

There is a big green circle on the sides of the shelters, perfect for the city’s lemon logo to fit in, City Councilman George Gastil said.

City Manager Graham Mitchell expects the 10 new shelters to be delivered in May or June and should be up by summer.
