How to Tighten a Barbed Wire Fence

Barbed wire is dangerous to touch and to work with as the barbs can catch clothes and skin. Over time, your barbed wire may sag, endangering people who even walk by the fence. Tensioning the wire may be necessary to prevent injury to others. When working with barbed wire, use the correct tools to prevent injury to yourself and your work partners.

Instructions
1 Loosen your barbed wire carefully using a pair of pliers to twist the end of the wire till it is loose from your pole. Loose a little at a time to prevent the barbed wire from releasing quickly and injuring someone.

2 Anchor your tensioner tool to the corner post.

3 Insert the end of your barbed wire into the wire tensioner.

4 Go to the beginning of the fence and tug lightly on the wire, moving along the wire back to the post with the tensioner on it. Pull the wire tight into the tensioner and lock the tensioner.

5 Pull back on the tensioner to pull the wire back until the wire feels tight.

6 Clamp down the barbed wire to the post by removing it from the tensioning tool, holding the wire with a clamp to keep the tension. Wrap the wire around the pole and twist it to hold it in place.
