The finest quality woven mesh

ANew York Wire Co. is closing its York plant.

"We have a dedicated, hard working, local workforce that allows us to manufacture the finest quality woven mesh in the world right here in Pennsylvania," the company states on its website.

The company, which makes products such as wire screens for doors and windows, told the state Department of Labor and Industry it intends to close that site and lay off workers, according to department spokeswoman Lindsay Bracale.

New York Wire's 441 E. Market St. location would be affected; the company also has a location in Hanover. New York Wire dates back to 1888.

The department is waiting on a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice to be filed by the company that will indicate details such as date of closure and number of workers affected, Bracale said.

Then the department's Rapid Response team will help affected workers get information they need to obtain unemployment services such as retraining, continuing education and re-employment.

In general, WARN notices are filed when 100 or more employees are affected.

Guy Fritz, chief executive officer, declined to comment, and John Spillane, executive chairman, said he had no comment.

According to the company's LinkedIn profile, it has between 500-1,000 overall employees. The Market Street location houses the weaving division, according to the website. There's no indication how many employees work at the Market Street location.

The profile and the company website say New York Wire is well known for its insect screening, its industrial mesh for filtration products, its woven fiberglass mesh and its WallSpan drywall tape. The company prides itself on manufacturing products locally.
