Olympic torch named Design of the Year

Hits: 2

The London Olympic torch has won the Design Museum’s Design of the Year Award.

The elegant perforated aluminium torch, created by British designers Barber Osgerby, makes some amends for the unfortunate and much derided 2012 faux graffiti logo.

The design impressively melds functional and symbolic roles. The 8,000 circular perforations represent the number of bearers – mostly members of the public – who will relay the torch around the country, but they also reduce the weight to make it easier to carry and ensure heat from the flame is dissipated and not transmitted to the bearer’s hand.
