Before using your stainless-steel grill rack for the first time, heat it to 250 degrees, then turn it off.

Cut a raw potato in half.

Pour vegetable oil into a pie tin or dish. Add just enough to cover the bottom of the pan. Add more if needed.

Dip the cut end of the potato into the vegetable oil. Stab the uncut end with a fork, and use the fork as a handle.

Using the potato halves, spread vegetable oil over the hot surface of the grill rack.
