About Spice Racks

A spice rack is a great way to add some color, taste and decoration to your kitchen. They provide an organizational place for your spices so they are not all over your kitchen cabinets or counters, while at the same time supplying excitement and experimentation to your home cooking. Spice racks can be made out of a variety of materials and styles, but all serve the same function.

History

Spices have been discovered as far back as 50,000 B.C., and by around 2000 B.C. a spice trade was prevalent throughout the Middle East with spices, such as cinnamon and pepper. The first major use of spices was for medical use, where most doctors used spices to cure certain ailments. From there, the use of spices grew from medicine to uses such as magic, religion, preservation and traditional ceremonies. It is not for certain, but experts are quite sure that spice racks were invented sometime around 1000 B.C., probably constructed out of certain woods to hold all of the sacks or jars of spices. It would have been invented purely for storing purposes, and was not meant as decoration as many people use it in the twenty-fist century. Nowadays it is a regular fixture to a kitchen, whether it is used or not.
